April 11, 2010: Theatre Performance of "Stealing German Bread"
On April 11, the Holocaust Education Resource Council is presenting a Readers Theatre Performance of "Stealing German Bread," a memoir of The Nazis’ crushing brutality on over six million lives could not undermine the love between two sisters. Stealing German Bread recounts the true story of two sisters jolted out of a normal life in Hungary and thrown straight into Auschwitz , the largest of the Nazi concentration and extermination camps. Beginning with a recurring dream of a mother, a dream that reappears nightly well into years after the war, this touching and heartfelt tale shares how the two sisters supported each other throughout the unspeakable atrocities inside the camp. Yocheved Artzi, who was born six years after the Holocaust, brings her personal thoughts and feelings into this book as a child who grew up in Israel among many Holocaust survivors. She reveals how her eighty-year-old mother found comfort in retelling her experience during the Nazi regime via transatlantic phone calls sixty years after the war. Profoundly emotional, Stealing German Bread examines up close the deep-rooted reverberations that the Holocaust created on the survivors, and explores the extraordinary strengths that love can awaken in a person. A Readers Theatre is a dramatic presentation of a written work in a script form. Some celebrity readers will be Commissioner Gil Ziffer and Representative Curtis Richardson. Proceeds generated from this event will benefit HERC's mission of supporting Holocaust education. The performance will be at 3:00pm and a reception and book signing by the author follow the performance, all at Young Actors Theatre. Tickets are $75, includes the book, the performance, and a chance to win artwork by famous artist Peter Max.
